my story
I'm Marie Arthur, a Sydney based artist, photographer and creative.
My creative practice began with photography, particularly black and white, through which I explore light, shadow, form, texture, architecture, people and the character of everyday places.
I'm curious about the way visual details can change how we experience the world. A particular light across a building. An intriguing interior. A fleeting moment. The atmosphere of a room. Something ordinary becoming unexpectedly beautiful.
Photography is my visual language, but my curiosity extends beyond the image. I'm interested in the spaces, objects, music, design and experiences that surround us, including how they can be brought together to create a feeling.
Photography is my starting point. I'm curious to see where the wider creative world leads…
creative PHILOSOPHY
I want to create a world around beauty.
I'm drawn to the details that make us stop, look again and feel something. Think of light and shadow, beautiful spaces, intriguing objects, music, texture, architecture, people and unexpected moments.
Working primarily in black and white allows me to distil a scene to its essential elements. It is a visual language that feels honest to the way I naturally see.
I'm increasingly interested in what happens beyond the photograph too, such as how art, space, sound, design and experience can come together to create an atmosphere and transport us somewhere else.
My aim is simple: to create beautiful things, spaces and experiences that make ordinary life feel a little more extraordinary.
